Sir Julian Horn-Smith Joins CVC as Senior Advisor
CVC Capital Partners (“CVC”), a leading global private equity house, is pleased to announce the appointment of Sir Julian Horn-Smith as Senior Advisor to CVC, with immediate effect. Sir Julian will work with CVC’s Telecoms, Media and Technology (“TMT”) team to support CVC’s global investment advisory activities in the sector.
With 19 offices throughout Europe, Asia and the United States, CVC has an industry-leading global presence. CVC currently has €16 billion of uninvested equity capital, making the firm one of the top five sources of available private equity funding worldwide.
Sir Julian has spent more than 25 years in the telecommunications sector, most recently as Deputy Chief Executive Officer and main Board Member of Vodafone Group Plc. He has held a number of posts with Vodafone including Group Chief Operating Officer and was considered to be the principal architect of the firm’s international strategy. He was closely involved with many of Vodafone’s major transactions including the formation of Vodafone AirTouch in 1999 and the acquisition of Mannesmann in 2000 to create the world’s largest mobile telecommunications company. He is a member of the Board of Digicel Limited, the Caribbean and Pacific mobile telecom operator and a member of the Advisory Board of Altimo (the telecoms arm of Alfa Group). He is also a member of the Board of Lloyds Banking Group Plc and a Senior Advisor to UBS Investment Bank.

About Sir Julian Horn-Smith
Sir Julian Horn-Smith, age 59, is a Senior Advisor to UBS Investment Bank, in London. Sir Julian is a member of the Board of Lloyds TSB Group Plc (Non Executive Director), Digicel Limited, the Caribbean and Pacific mobile telecom operator and Martin Dawes Systems Ltd. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of Altimo (the telecoms arm of Alfa Group), who have extensive investments (notably in Russia and the Ukraine). In addition to his directorships, Sir Julian is the Chairman of the Turkish British Business Counsel (TBBC), Chairman of the Bath University School of Management Advisory Board and the President of the Egyptian Exploration Society.
Sir Julian was one of the founding members of The Vodafone Group Plc and considered to be the principal architect in the development of Vodafone’s International Strategy. He was awarded a Knighthood by Her majesty the Queen in 2005 in recognition of his services to international telecommunications. He retired from the Vodafone Board in July 2006, where he held the title Deputy Chief Executive Officer.
Prior to his joining Vodafone as a Marketing Executive in 1984, Sir Julian held positions at Mars and Philips Electronics. He holds a Degree in Economics from the University of London and an MBA and honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Bath.
